AES Wind, Solar and Other Renewables

AES is developing projects to meet growing market needs for renewable energy resources and technologies in order to provide sustainable and affordable electricity.

As alternatives to traditional fossil fuels become more economically competitive, more necessary and more in demand, we see opportunity. That's why AES in California is investing in new wind and solar generation.

Wind

AES Wind Generation, formed in 2004, leverages AES' more than 25 years experience in originating, financing, developing and managing power projects all over the world.  Today AES Wind Generation operates more than 198 MW of wind capacity in California, and another 1,600 MW of wind capacity in China and Europe.

Responding to California’s growing need for renewable energy, AES is expanding its existing wind generation in Palm Springs with the construction of Mountain View IV — a new wind farm consisting of 49 one-MW turbines that will generate power under an agreement with Southern California Edison.

The infrastructure portion of the project was completed in March 2011, followed by substation completion in July 2011 and finally turbine installation which began in September 2011. Commercial operation is scheduled for December of this year.

Solar

AES Solar is a joint venture between AES and Riverstone Holdings LLC. Through this partnership,  AES Solar is developing utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in California.  Formed in 2008, AES Solar owns and operates more than 30 MW of projects in Europe, and has a development pipeline of projects in countries around the world that offer incentives for renewable energy projects.

Battery Storage

AES Huntington Beach initiated Project Sano, a 2-megawatt energy storage unit containing 83,000 small lithium-ion battery cells-enough to generate power to 1,500 homes.   This unit passed the required system certification testing for frequency regulation and was involved with several pilot efforts with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) as they evolve their market for new technologies.

The project is used primarily as a testing and controls development platform today and was a succesful part of a demonstration project by AES Energy Storage and its technology partners.

AES Energy Storage is the owner-operator of advanced storage projects that provide emissions-free capacity to improve the performance and reliability of today’s power grid. Emissions-free capacity is a fast and flexible power system resource, combining patented software, dynamic power control and storage technology.
